Fleetwood – 1979 – Fishing

The first day of issue was 24 OCT 1979. There are 5 covers for this series, one has all 4 stamps on it, plus the 4 single covers (one for each stamp):

20c Trout Fishing

35c Fishing for Pleasure

50c Deep Sea Fishing

55c Surf Fishing

Set of 4 stamps / “Australian Fishing” (cachet)

Somewhat harder to find than the “Ferries & Steamers” & “Steam Locomotives” set. It would be very interesting to know production numbers of these old Fleetwood covers but I don’t think that information is available anywhere, unfortunately…

Some more information about the artist Brian Clinton from the Unicover website:

Brian Clinton
Australian, 1942-

Trained in advertising design, Brian Clinton worked in Melbourne, Australia, for several years, honing his skills in illustration. He has created designs for many prestigious clients, including Australia Post, General Motors, TV Week, Marlboro, Trans Australian Airways, Australian Tourist Commission, and Department of Trade. Clinton’s experience in stamp design began when he was commissioned to create a series of stamps featuring Australian race horses that also included advertising promotions, stamp packs and First Day Covers. He later designed a Human Rights issue for pre-stamped envelopes and the 1979 Australia Day stamp, as well as a series of stamps celebrating fishing in Australia. He says, “I find stamp design to be one of the most exacting, yet one of the most rewarding spheres of my work.”
